Greek Quince Dessert

Greek Quince Dessert

A very Greek traditional dessert is the so called spoon sweet. It’s a bit like a jam, chopped pieces of fruit in syrup.

The easiest way to make this dessert is to just add the fruit and sugar in a sauce pan, bring to boil and cook in medium heat for a further 20- 30 minutes.

Some greek families boil the fruit in two stages. You will need roughly another 30 minutes’ boiling on a medium heat.

Ingredients:

  • 1kg of quinces
  • 700gr sugar
  • 100gr peeled almonds (Optional)
  • 2 cups of water
  • lemon juice from half a lemon

Method:

  1. Wash and towel dry the quinces.
  2. Peel off each quince and cut thin long strips from top to bottom of the fruit.
  3. Prepare a large bowl with water and add the slices so they don’t turn dark.
  4. Transfer quince stripa to a large saucepan and add pour water to cover the fruit.
  5. Add the sugar, cover the saucepan, and bring to a boil over high heat.
  6. Once it boils , lower the heat to medium-high, remove cover.
  7. At this stage, you might need to skim any foam that appears on the surface.
  8. Cook until the syrup coats a spoon and before removing from the heat add the lemon juice. Towards the end you can also add the almonds if using.
  9. Enjoy your Greek Quince Dessert!
