Irish Soda Bread

Are you looking for a quick and easy homemade bread recipe? The famous Irish Soda Bread can be made with white or brown flour and the whole process is super easy. Just mix all the ingredients together to make the dough, knead and bake.

Soda Bread is basically a bread recipe that uses the bicarbonate of soda instead of yeast as a leavening agent. Irish Soda Bread is best served warm out of the oven with some butter and jam and it’s also perfect with soups.

Ingredients: 

  • 350gr plain white flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate soda
  • 150ml buttermilk

Method: 

  1. Sieve the flour, salt and soda in a bowl.
  2. Make a well in the middle and add the buttermilk.
  3. Stir with a wooden spoon and mix well until it becomes a dough.
  4. If it’s too dry add a bit more buttermilk and stir again.
  5. Turn it out onto a floured board and knead.
  6. Use a knife to mark the dough with a cross and place into a baking tray.
  7. Bake in a pre-heated oven 20 -30 minutes at 200C
  8.  You’ll know your Irish soda bread  is cooked when tapping its underside produces a hollow sound.
  9. Allow to cool and enjoy with some butter!
