Syrian Meat and Potatoes

This Syrian Meat and Potatoes recipe originated from Damascus, Syria about 400 years ago. The arabic name is مفركة بطاطا باللحمة which translates to small cubed potato with meat. It’s a hearty dish, full of flavour and with many variations to try.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsps butter
  • 3 tbsps sunflower oil
  • 8 medium size potatoes
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 500gr minced meat, beef or lamb
  • Salt & pepper
  • Pinch of sweet paprika
  • 1 Cinnamon stick

Method: 

  1. Thinly chop the onions.
  2. Peel the potatoes and rinse well.
  3. Cube the potatoes, so you have little cubes as you can see from the picture above.
  4. In a saucepan add the butter and sunflower oil over high heat.
  5. Once the oil is nice and warm add the mince and sprinkle with paprika.
  6. Add the onions and cook until golden brown.
  7. When the mince is cooked through add in the cubed potatoes.
  8. Toss gently and cook for a few minutes.
  9. Pour in water, cover everything and add the cinnamon stick.
  10. Then cover and let it cook in medium heat for about 30 minutes.
  11. Serve by itself or with a side salad.
